Cleaning Your Tongue: The Facts

Posted .

As you may know, there are many steps you’ll need take if you’re interested in enjoying a healthy, happy smile. For example, you’ve probably learned that you should visit our team twice a year and that you should brush and floss on a daily basis. Yet, if you are interested in improving your oral health, you may want to consider brushing your tongue.

Please understand that brushing your tongue isn’t something you may need to do, but you could enjoy a few benefits if you do. You see, cleaning your tongue isn’t necessary because your tongue does a fairly good job of keeping itself clean. Still, your tongue might harbor bad bacteria that can cause bad breath. However, please know that the bacteria might also spread to your back teeth. While you would think this could cause problems, you should be fine as long as you brush and floss consistently.

Still, if you have a sensitive gag reflex, you may struggle to brush your tongue with a toothbrush. Fortunately, you might be able to clean your tongue with a tool called a tongue scraper. As you may have surmised, tongue scrapers are designed to keep your tongue clean and healthy, but did you know that these tongue scrapers are designed to be able to clean without aggravating your gag reflex? Moreover, if your gag reflex is a serious issue, you may want to try a plastic scraper as they typically work better for people with a sensitive gag reflex. Metal tongue scrapers are also available.
